Austin City Council Election 1977

The 1977 election was historic for being the first time a woman (Carole Keeton McClellan) was elected mayor. After serving three terms as mayor, McClellan went on to win higher office as state comptroller (as Carole Keeton Rylander). After leaving state office, Strayhorn ran a distant third in the mayoral race of 2009.

Other new faces on the 1977 council were Ron Mullen (who would be elected mayor in 1983) and Richard Goodman.
