Austin City Council Election 1983

The 1983 election was notable for having two experienced council members competing for the open mayor’s position. Two-term incumbent Ron Mullen was trying to move to the center of the dais, while former three-term council member Lowell Lebermann (1971-1977) was also bidding for the job.

The mayoral contest was thrown into a runoff by Michael “Max” Nofziger, who had been an also-ran city council candidate in 1979 and 1981. Nofziger pulled 11.57 percent of the vote to force the runoff, which Mullen won.

Incumbent Council Members Roger Duncan, John Trevino Jr., and Charles Urdy won reelection.

Sally Shipman and Mark Spaeth both won their races for open seats on the council.
