Austin City Council Election 2005

In the 2005 council election, incumbent Betty Dunkerley easily won reelection.

The two other council seats on the ballot were open, given that Jackie Goodman and Daryl Slusher were term-limited.

Lee Leffingwell, who had served on the city’s Environmental Board for five years, beat five candidates to win the Place 1 seat without a runoff.

Jennifer Kim, who was runner-up in the general election and trailing by 13 points, went on to win her runoff and become the first Asian-American to win a seat on the Austin City Council.

Proposition 1 was the only measure on the ballot with the council elections. Prop 1 gained 51 percent approval by voters to expand the current city ordinance that prohibits smoking in public places to apply to all bars, restaurants, bowling alleys, and billiard parlors, except for restaurants with restricted permits that are renewable through September 1, 2012.
