Be a Bulldog Supporter

Not everyone can be an investigative reporter. But you can sure help us to get more investigative reporting done.

Your support is especially important right now because we’re in the midst of our annual NewsMatch fundraising campaign. Individual tax-deductible donations of up to $5,000 received by December 31, 2020, will be tripled thanks to national and local sponsors. Or if you sign up to make a new monthly sustaining contribution, that will be matched times 12. A $15 monthly contribution, for example, will bring $180.

Mark Dewey, Ray Head, Peck Young, and Martin Zamzow were the first to respond to our November 10, 2020, appeal, and each donated $100. The very next day longtime supporter Perry Lorenz donated $1,000.

After our second appeal more supporters joined the list: Linda Bailey ($200), Dana DeBeauvoir, John Strange, John Blinn, and Mary Ann Roser ($100 each), and Gordon Daugherty $50.

Mike Levy, founder and retired publisher of Texas Monthly also donated $250.

Connie McMillan donated $300, Annette Naish contributed $15 and Thomas Riggles contributed $25.

Lorri Michel donated $1,000.

Brandon Roberts, who provided technical support for the Bulldog’s groundbreaking investigation of homestead exemption abuses in 2013, donated $100.

That brings total donations so far to $3,740, with matches that’s $11,220. Thanks so much to all of you for your generous support.

Please add your name to this list of donors. Do it now. And take pride in knowing your tax-deductible contribution helps us to continue publishing the unique, original, and fiercely independent reporting that holds the powers that be accountable.

We are deeply grateful for support

Since launching The Austin Bulldog, our fundraising efforts have always taken a back seat to doing investigative reporting that makes a difference. But even with our low-key approach to asking for support, over the years some 300 people have made a tax-deductible contribution at least once. Some have contributed almost every year—or even every month to support and sustain this important work. We are proud to recognize the name of each supporter below.

The Austin Bulldog started with a $25,000 New Voices grant approved in 2009 by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. That money was used to obtain IRS approval of our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and build the website we used to launch publication April 1, 2010. We finessed the April Fool’s Day launch by saying, “We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we take our reporting very seriously.” We still do.

Our mainstay local support has been provided by the Austin-based Kirk Mitchell Public Interest Investigative Journalism Fund and community supporters just like you.

Participation in NewsMatch in the closing months of each year provided significant sums. Much of the NewsMatch proceeds received in 2018 were used to build this exciting new website that makes our rich archives more easily accessible and makes the presentation of our professional reporting a lot more attractive. NewsMatch proceeds from 2019 enabled hiring a part-time reporter to increase the breadth and depth of our 2020 City Council election coverage.

Local support makes all the difference

The Austin Bulldog has no hidden agendas, no invisible people behind the curtain to influence what we do or do not investigate or how our coverage may have been influenced.

To that end, the names of all contributors are gratefully acknowledged and permanently recognized on this website. While contributors may request anonymity, we much prefer to list our donors by name so that there can be no question of the source of funds that make our work possible.

The total amount of money we have raised each year, shown below, has come from donors who recognized the value of our reporting and made a personal commitment to supporting it.
