Austin City Council Election 2001

The 2001 mayoral election was a special election to fill the unexpired term of Mayor Kirk Watson, who had resigned.

Former three-term Council Member Gus Garcia bested seven opponents—including former one-term Council Member Eric Mitchell—to become the first Latino mayor in Austin history. Garcia also became the first person elected mayor who did not live either downtown or in West Austin.
